BINAURAL BATCOON
Recorded by D. Schneider 2012
ASPMC.2012.01
Habitat: Land dwelling, tundra, caves, sheer rock walls
Feeds on logic and art
Attributes: athletic physique, indifferent attitude, self-composed
Endangered Status: While there appear to be multiple healthy communities of batcoons, the ASPMC has put them on our species watchlist for fear that their food supply may be dwindling
This athletic species is extremely muscular and sinewy, known for their endurance in climbing impressive sheer faced rock walls and even setting up habitats there. The batcoon has evolved to form a symbiotic relationship with sentient species, both magical and non-magical and lives mostly on elements of logic and art derived from different communities. Historically Native American communities considered a great honor to have a batcoon roost in your village because it was a sign that you had created some impressive (and tasty) art and/or logic.
Batcoon populations thrived in England and France during the Enlightenment period and there was also a population boom in the east coast of the United States during the late 1830’s. The transcendentalists, not knowing the species, found them to be an outright nuisance and there are accounts of Margaret Fuller writing about the “pesky racoon-looking things” that had set up camp around the Bronson Alcott house. Populations of batcoons leveled out through the 20th century but have dropped since the turn of the 21st century, causing us to place them on our ASPMC endangered watchlist. Though population levels are not yet critical, we’re concerned about the scarcity of their food source. Research is also being conducted on the batcoon’s unusual method of especially attuned hearing, which we think may be connected to how they locate and collect food.
