MYCOLOTL

Recorded by T. Heibeck 1998

MC.1998.01.07

Habitat: Land dwelling- forest, bogs, wet and misty places

Ovovore, also feeds on emotion

Attributes: generally contemptuous

Endangered Status: rare

The Mycolotl is quite unusual and rarely seen by humans, magical or otherwise and it has never been seen in captivity. Based on the field research of Dr. T Heibeck in the 1990’s we have learned that the mycolotl lives in dark, moist forests and eats mostly eggs and emotion. This is odd because as before mentioned, the creature is seldom around humans, the most emotional of creatures. For years scientists have yearned to discover how the mycolotl is fed on emotions while living in such an emotionally barren area as the deep forest. It would be odd for an animal to live off of the emotions of its own species… something of species cannibalism so that’s been largely discounted as a solution.

One theory that has been proposed is that mycolotls survive by causing outsized emotional spikes in other creatures. They’re well-known to be contemptuous and by treating any creature with contempt, they may be able to generate enough emotion from that creature to be fed for months- much like large carnivores will devour one large meal and spend the next few weeks digesting. While the creature is a wonder to behold, roughly the size of a North American deer with fibrous tendrils and cubic stems, we can’t help but be grateful that the Mycolotl is not often seen.
