Endangered Status: Rare, Endangered

The curiolemus is a rare creature on our endangered species list. The danger to this species is endemic and structural: as a creature that thrives on wonder and amazement, as more locations in the world are discovered there is simply less amazement for the curiolemus to feed off of. The curiolemus population exploded during the romantic era from 1800 through the 1890’s and though it waned through the first world war and into the 20’s, again there was a population explosion in the 1920’s with the boom amateur Egyptologists exploring caves of northern Africa.

The Curiolemus hibernates for six months of the year and is completely nomadic. It will remain in a cave or mostly unexplored region- usually a place that has some interesting historical or geological feature- and wait for the place to be discovered by explorers and then tourists. Fully fed, it will move to its next feeding location as the former lair becomes more common and the wonder supply dwindles.

In recent times urban curiolemuses have become a phenomenon and they have been spotted in places like St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City and unexpected parts of Detroit.
